Welcome SLJ Fashion Advisory Students!

Hi Class,

The original blog project with the Harlem Textile Works interns from City as school has been postponed- but thanks to Mr. Pangie you now have a blog of your own!

This blog is a space for you to post about your IDEAS, CREATIVITY, and INSPIRATION. It is an open space where you can process your thoughts so that they can influence your artistic work for the Fashion Advisory/Harlem Textile Works and beyond.

You will use the blog to post your responses to the assignments given to you in class. You are also invited to post about any other ideas, creativity, or inspiration you may want to express. You can make comments on your classmates posts, and invite your friends to view the blog and add comments of their own. The only rule is to be respectful at all times- that means no cursing, no 'adult' content, and no criticism of others unless it is constructive and politely stated.

To get started, everyone needs to create a post of their own responding to the last assignment you were given in class about advertisements. You were asked to pay close attention to the advertisements you pass by everyday, and reconsider them with the new information you learned about typography. Answer questions like: How do the type face choices of the graphic designers relate to the message? Do you think the advertisement is effective? What would you do differently? Do you like the advertisement?

I'll get you going by posting about an advertisement that has caught my eye over the last few weeks. The ad is for an new reality show about a bakery in New Jersey. The star of the show is pictured looking very serious with his arms folded, but his head is covered in flour-- not very serious at all. This contrast of mood (serious and light/humorous) is repeated in the type face selection of the ad's designers. For the word 'CAKE' they have used a delicate SARIF font in white with additional ornamentation (decoration). For the word 'BOSS' they have used an extra-bold SAN-SARIF font in red. The word appears to have been stamped down on to the ad making me imagine someone with
authority forcefully stamping down their
approval or disapproval on to an important document. I think that the advertisement is effective because it gives me an idea of what the show is probably about- a sort of 'macho man' in the not-so traditionally macho business of cake baking. However, I can't say that I actually like the advertisement because I think it re-instills old sterio-types about mafia 'bosses' which are offensive to a lot of people, and somewhat played-out in general.

Now lets see what observations you've made... Label these posts 'Ad Assignment'.
